Because people stand in the same line, waiting for a register to become available, there are no "slow" lines, delayed by a coupon-counting customer or languid cashier.

This never occurred to me. How many of you have gotten stuck behind someone really slow (for the life of me I don't know why ANYONE still writes checks). In my case, my wife and I sometimes split it (and I'm sure you have too) to maximize chances of getting there faster.
